In the letter to Croker, January 11, 1889, Smith refers to the death of Halliwell-Phillipps; he also says he is giving Lear on the Strood stage and that Irving has mistaken Shakespeare's character of Macbeth. In the letters to Mayer, 1868-1869, Smith refers to proposals for the commemoration of Garrick's Jubilee at Stratford-on-Avon. The letter to Hunt, October 14, 1881, has a copy of the letter which prompted Smith's reply. Also, a letter from the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland to Smith, October 2, 1874. Some letters are undated.
